Biography

Dr Gavin Urie is a Lecturer in Hospitality Management within the Business School at Âé¶¹ÉçÇø. He is the Programme Leader for BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management. He specialises in food and beverage management, accommodation management, sustainability, experience design, business skills and the development of alternative economies within hospitality provision. Gavin teachings hospitality management at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels at Âé¶¹ÉçÇø in addition to Global Online modules.

Gavin completed his undergraduate degree (BA (Hons) Community Arts) and postgraduate degree (MSc International Hospitality & Tourism Management) at the University of Strathclyde before moving to Âé¶¹ÉçÇø to complete his PhD. Gavin’s supervisory team included Professor Paul Lynch, Dr Tijana Rakic and Dr Ahmed Hassenien.

Gavin’s research focused on the growth of network commensality (pop-ups, supper clubs, etc.) and how these experiences contribute to alternative economies of hospitality. He also looked at the social interactions, use of space, understanding of tradition, background and upbringing in creating memorable meal experiences from both a guest and host perspective. Gavin has appeared at a number of internationally recognised conferences and contributes to various academic publications.

During his PhD studies, Gavin was also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methods, a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education and was awarded Fellowship status by the Higher Education Academy.

Prior to entering Higher Education, Gavin has worked in a number of hospitality settings as waiter, barman, restaurant supervisor, residences assistant, etc. He also worked as an English Teacher for adult learners in Seville, Spain for two years and a support work for adults with additional needs. During his studies, Gavin also worked as a Non-Medical Personal Helper and supported and mentored a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
