This chapter defines cycle logistics in terms of a formal specification, the characteristics of the main types of vehicles used and operating ranges. It then considers the main reasons for employing cargo bikes in the urban freight market, and discusses the key factors behind, and main inhibitors to, the modes of successful implementation into urban supply chains. In commercial operation, it should also be noted that both cargo bikes and cargo tricycles are heavily adapted from those bought from the supplier, and in the case of tricycles, are often built from the frame upwards. When examining the issue of cycle logistics, it is worth considering the backdrop to it, particularly recent developments and trends in the urban freight market. As regards an active freight transport policy, it has also become evident through our own experience that the commercial success of cycle logistics operations is strongly tied to progressive local policy measures in the area of green urban logistics.
